New Year (yılbaşı), not Christmas, is the year-end gifting occasion.

How companies in Turkey give year-end gifts

In Turkey, the year-end occasion is New Year (yılbaşı), not Christmas. Decorated trees, Noel Baba (Father Christmas) imagery and gift-giving are associated with New Year, and companies send gift baskets, chocolates, calendars and branded items to clients and staff in December. Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı are the main religious holidays, and sweets and gift boxes are given to staff and partners around them. 'Mutlu Yıllar' (Happy New Year) is the standard greeting; avoid presenting gifts as Christmas gifts. Alcohol is legal but heavily taxed, and many recipients do not drink, so it is safer to leave it out of corporate gifts. Turkish-language cards are appreciated. Gifts are usually delivered to offices in the second half of December. Many companies also send branded New Year calendars and diaries.

Good practice

  • Frame December gifts as New Year gifts ('Mutlu Yıllar').
  • Chocolates, tea and branded items are well received.
  • Consider Ramazan Bayramı as a second gifting moment.

Avoid

  • Avoid overt Christmas religious imagery.
  • Leave alcohol out unless you know the recipient.

Design and wording

New Year designs are best; avoid overt Christian symbols.
